Gas Stove Recall Due to Fire and Explosion Hazard

gas stove recallOn September 23, 2014, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a recall of gas fireplaces, log sets, inserts, and stoves manufactured by Hearth & Home Technologies due to a potential risk of gas leaks. According to the CPSC, the gas valve in the units can leak and pose a fire hazard.

The gas stove recall involves an estimated 20,000 units that were sold at fireplace retailers between May 2014 and July 2014 for $1,200 to $8,000. These models include:

  • Quadra Fire indoor gas inserts and stoves
  • Outdoor Lifestyles outdoor gas fireplaces
  • Heatilator indoor gas inserts and fireplaces
  • Heat-N-Glo indoor stoves, gas fireplaces, and inserts
  • Hearth & Home Technologies gas log sets and indoor gas fireplaces

To date, no incidents or injuries have been reported. Customers are urged to immediately stop using the log sets, inserts, stoves, and gas fireplaces and to turn off the gas to the units to prevent any potential leakage. Consumers should contact the retailer whey they purchased the unit to arrange for an inspection and valve replacement at no cost to them.

According to the CPSC, dealers and retailers will be made aware of the gas stove recall and will be reimbursed by Hearth & Home Technologies. Customers are asked to contact Hearth & Home Technologies to learn more about repair and replacement of the unit.

It is important to take caution when handling gas stoves and fireplaces, particularly because of the serious fire hazard risk. Should the gas line leak and ignite, the consumer is at risk of experiencing a fire or explosion. For this reason, it is important to seek legal counsel if you have been injured or suffered a loss due to a potentially defective product, as you may have a product liability lawsuit against the manufacturer. While recalls can involve any number of defects such as products that do not perform as intended, those involving gas lines or explosions, including Blitz gas cans that can potentially ignite, have the potential to be particularly deadly.
