U.S. Set Record Drug Recalls in 2014

drug recallsThe Regulatory Affairs Professionals Society has released a report in which the organization estimates that the number of drug recalls in 2014 may be the highest in history. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) categorizes all drug recalls into classes and, according to the report, the most common types of medicines that are being recalled are those that fall under a Class II recall. These products may cause medically reversible or temporary adverse health consequences if consumers use them. Additionally, Class II drug recalls involve medications that have a remote probability of serious health consequences.

As of mid-August 2014, the FDA has reported 836 drug recalls, 650 of which are Class II. In 2013, 1,225 recalls were issued, and 84 percent of these were Class II. While the increase in medication recalls has been steady across the board, Class II recalls have reportedly seen the most significant growth. In 2012, 76 percent of the 499 recalls were Class II. If the rate continues as expected, 2014 could surpass the previous record for the number of drug products that have been pulled from the market.

Recent Drug Recalls and Lawsuits

There are several allegedly dangerous drugs that have been the subject of growing litigation throughout the country, and several of which have been pulled from the market. Plaintiffs have filed lawsuits against the manufacturers with similar claims of negligence and a failure to warn the public and medical communities of potential side effects and life-threatening complications. Drugs that are subject to lawsuits include:

  • Oral contraceptives such as Yaz and Yasmin
  • Type 2 diabetes medications such as Januvia, Victoza, Byetta, Bydureon
  • Testosterone replacement therapies such as AndroGel and Androderm
  • SSRIs such as Zoloft, Lexapro, and Prozac
  • Drugs intended to help reduce the risk of clotting such as Pradaxa and Xarelto
  • Dialysis products such as GranuFlo and NaturaLyte

Plaintiffs have allegedly suffered from complications ranging from internal bleeding, pancreatic cancer, thyroid cancer, heart attacks, strokes, birth defects, death, and more. As a result, many are seeking legal counsel across the country to pursue claims for compensation and hold the manufacturers responsible for the injuries allegedly caused by negligence, a failure to adequately test  products, or a failure to warn consumers of the risks and side effects.
