The Mirena IUD is a well known and widely used contraceptive device. Heavily marketed and promoted since its introduction, millions of women have used the Mirena IUD. As an intrauterine device (IUD), it is placed inside the uterus and releases progesterone that thins the uterine walls and makes it difficult for sperm to reach the egg.

Despite its popularity, however, many women are filing a Mirena IUD Lawsuit after suffering serious complications which they claim were caused by the device. Bayer Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Mirena, was sent a warning letter from the FDA in 2009 due to concerns that the company was promoting the device in advertising and other marketing as being more effective than it actually, was while minimizing its risks.

What are the Risks of Using a Mirena IUD?

The Mirena IUD has been known to migrate from its original position embed itself deep into the uterine wall, and sometimes out of the uterus. This has reportedly caused abscesses and vaginal erosion. In some instances the migration can cause a perforation of the uterus and infertility. In certain cases it can be fatal.

Other side effects linked to the Mirena IUD include:

  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
  • Tears or perforations of the uterine wall
  • Abscesses or lesions that can lead to infertility
  • Embedment of the device in the uterus, requiring surgery to remove
  • Inflammation of the membrane that lines the abdominal cavity and internal organs (peritonitis)
  • Erosion of adjacent areas such as the vagina
  • Intestinal perforations or obstruction

Severe side effects are likely to require removal of the device in a surgical procedure that involves additional risks.  Even after removal, patients might suffer from infections and other lifelong complications, including decreased libido, weight gain, acne, breast tenderness, ovarian cysts, and irregular bleeding.

Mirena IUD lawsuits are being filed across the country because of injuries allegedly caused by this device, and Bayer has been accused of failing to disclose known risks associated with the Mirena IUD.

Affected Women May Be Entitled to Compensation

Medical device makers have a duty to make sure that their products are safe and to inform the public about any complications that may be associated with use of the device. If a company breaches these duties, it can be liable for injuries that may result.

Women who have been injured by the Mirena IUD may be entitled to compensation for damages, including:

  • Medical expenses
  • Pain and suffering
  • Mental anguish
  • Loss of income or ability to work

If a woman has died due to complications associated with her Mirena IUD, her family can seek compensation for the wrongful death of their loved one, including:

  • Conscious pain and suffering of a loved one prior to death
  • Pain, suffering, and mental anguish suffered by the family
  • Loss of a loved one’s financial support
