Anyone who owns a Blitz portable gas can could be at danger. Most people use these plastic containers as effective and cheap storage for gas to have on hand around the house; however, those cans sometimes transform into exploding bombs. If you hold a gas can above the ground while filling it up, the gas container can be ignited by static electricity. It is just as dangerous to slide a gas can across a truck bed. Even such a move causing a spark from your trunk latch could result in an explosion. Unfortunately, many adults and children have suffered serious burns and even killed by exploding plastic gas containers. Although there are many manufacturers of consumer gas cans, the largest market share is Blitz USA. Even though numerous plaintiffs have filed Blitz gas can lawsuits, Blitz refused to use flame arrestors in their products. Continued lawsuits against the company is considered to be part of the reason why Blitz declared bankruptcy and announced it was shutting down in June 2012. Manufacturing Problems with Gas Cans

Companies who produce plastic gas cans know how to prevent explosions and have known this for quite some time, so it is extremely disheartening that gas can explosions continue to harm unsuspecting victims. Many consumer grade gas cans do not come equipped with a flame arrestor, which is an important safety feature that could help prevent injuries. A flame arrestor is a piece of wire mesh placed in the spout of a gas can. It lets the gas exit the can while preventing flames from causing ignition of gasoline vapors within the can. Explosions usually happen when vapors within the can become exposed to an open flame. The Consumer Product Safety Commission made it a requirement in January 2009 that plastic gas cans come equipped with child resistant safety caps, but there are still many gas cans out there that are unsafe and defective. Another problem with manufacturing is failing to provide adequate warnings on the gas can itself. The warning that is on the gas can is hard to read as it is just raised wording in the same color as the can. It would not cost that much more to provide an easily visible, bold warning label making consumers aware of its possible dangers and preventing many traumatic burn injury accidents.
