Statins Increase Risk of Type 2 Diabetes, Study Suggests

A study from Finland suggests that cholesterol-lowering statin medications may significantly increase the risk of developing type-2 diabetes. According to researchers, statins were associated with an increased risk of diabetes onset, even after results were adjusted for other factors that could have caused the increase. Statin medications such as Lipitor and other cholesterol-lowering drugs have been the subject of lawsuits as plaintiffs allege the drugs were defective and caused them to develop type 2 diabetes.

Statin Study Overview

According to the report, statins may impair the ability of the pancreas to secrete insulin, and they may also increase the patient’s resistance to insulin. Prior studies have suggested that statins such as Lipitor may increase a patient’s risk of type-2 diabetes, but these earlier studies were typically focused more on the drugs’ role in preventing cardiovascular disease, not on their possible relationship with type-2 diabetes. In the Finnish study, researchers tracked the effects of statins for six years on nearly 9,000 men without diabetes between the ages of 45 and 73. According to the results, the risk of diabetes increased with increased dosages taken of Lipitor (atorvastatin) and Zocor (simvastatin).

Low-dose simvastatin was associated with a 28 percent increased risk of developing diabetes, while high-dose simvastatin increased the risk 44 percent. The study also found that high-dose atorvastatin increased a patient’s diabetes risk by 37 percent.
