Testosterone Injections: A Treatment Too Good to Be True?

As men age, their bodies naturally start to produce lower levels of testosterone. Certain ailments and genetic conditions, as well as everyday stress, can serve to compound this decrease. For many men, testosterone injections have been beneficial in treating the effects of this decline. However, recent research seems to suggest that direct testosterone injections could potentially pose a significant health risk.

Many in the medical community view intramuscular injections of testosterone as the preferred method of treatment for decreased testosterone levels, given that they provide the most direct delivery method. Recently, however, clinical studies have indicated that the enhanced treatment offered by injections may come at a high cost.

Concerns Raised by Clinical Researchers

A study conducted by researchers from the University of North Carolina and shared by MedPage Today seems to reinforce some concerns that testosterone injections could be placing patients at a greater risk of developing certain medical conditions. The study consisted of a careful analysis of over 544,000 men from three separate patient populations:

  • A sample of commercial insurance carriers
  • A sample of Medicare participants
  • A sample of men from the U.K. whose records were drawn from the country’s Clinical Practice Research Datalink

Data was compiled for these subjects from their first year of testosterone therapy. The end goal was to determine which delivery mechanisms, if any, showed greater potential for adverse side effects. Of the group, over 37 percent had received injections.

The data suggests that those who received injections showed a greater risk for experiencing adverse cardiovascular events such as myocardial infarction (heart attack), stroke, and unstable angina. This group also showed a higher tendency to require hospitalization or experience premature death.

People Injured by Dangerous Drugs May Be Eligible for Compensation

If someone is injured by a drug, such as testosterone, they may be able to pursue a claim for compensation, or damages resulting from injuries, including medical expenses, loss of income or earning capacity, and pain and suffering. If someone is killed after suffering an injury caused by a drug, including heart attack, stroke, or other complication, that person’s family members may be able to pursue a claim for wrongful death damages, including mental anguish from loss of a loved one, loss of financial support, and funeral expenses.
