What is Nexplanon?

Nexplanon is a matchstick-sized, plastic contraceptive that is inserted in the upper arm right under the skin. It prevents pregnancy by releasing a hormone called progestin, which prevents ovulation.  First used in Indonesia, Nexplanon was approved for distribution by Merck and Co. in the United States in 2006. This type of long-acting but reversible contraceptive is a generally reliable method of birth control. Nexplanon, which must be inserted and removed by a healthcare professional, is said to be effective for a three-year period.

After the implant is inserted, the healthcare professional will check to make sure that the rod is in place by feeling for it. If it cannot be felt, there is no certainty that it is correctly in place, which may mean that it will not be effective. Sometimes a special test is necessary to confirm the site of the implant.

Nexplanon Side Effects

Nexplanon has become an extremely popular contraceptive device in the United States. However, it is now suspected of producing life-threatening blood clots, known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which usually develop in the legs. If a clot breaks away and enters the bloodstream, it may lodge in the lungs and restrict the flow of blood, which can cause a pulmonary embolism (PE). If you have been inserted with Nexplanon, call your health provider at once if you experience any of these symptoms:

  • Swelling, pain, and/or tenderness in the legs.
  • Tiredness in the legs.
  • Red or very warm skin.

If you are considering the use of Nexplanon, before doing so, talk to your doctor if you have any these factors, which might put you at risk for DVT:

  • High uncontrolled blood pressure.
  • Obesity.
  • Family history of blood clots and/or heart disease.
  • Smoking history.

Other health problems that have been linked to Nexplanon include Irregular bleeding. Although not considered life threatening, this does cause some women to terminate use of the contraceptive. Sometimes the rod moves slightly in the arm, which makes removal difficult. Some women develop ovarian cysts after being inserted with Nexplanon. They usually, but not always, disappear without treatment.

Sometimes, although rarely, pregnancy does occur after using the contraceptive. In many cases, that is due to improper insertion of the rod. If that happens, the pregnancy is likely to be ectopic, meaning it occurs outside the womb. Ectopic pregnancies may result in internal bleeding and infertility.
