What is Nexplanon?

Nexplanon is a contraceptive implant sold by Merck. It only uses progestin, unlike other contraceptives for women that use a combination of hormones. It is only about the size of a match and is implanted just below the skin of the upper arm on a woman. It releases tiny amounts of synthetic progestin over a long period of time. It is very effective as a contraceptive and has an even higher success rate than standard birth control pills. It works by preventing ovulation and inhibiting sperm from reaching the uterus.

The Risks of Using Nexplanon

The big problem with Nexplanon is that it has a very high incidence of blood clots in the women who use it. In fact, it has a 40 percent greater risk of causing blood clots than standard oral contraceptives of all kinds. This percentage is true for women between the ages of 15 to 49 regardless of their history of blood clots. It increases blood clot risk in every woman who uses it, including those with no other blood clot risk. Contraceptive implants like this one, as well as patches and rings, all have a greater risk of blood clots than oral contraceptives. The only exception is the Intra-Uterine Device (IUD). However, contraceptive implants like Nexplanon have the highest increased risk of blood clots for all women.

What is a Blood Clot and Why Can One Be Dangerous?

Blood clots are usually part of healthy healing. The body forms them naturally to stop bleeding if you cut yourself or open your skin in some way (such as through surgery). However, Nexplanon can cause the blood to clot without there being an injury present. These clots often form deep in the veins and are medical emergencies. Clots caused by Nexplanon and other contraceptive implants usually form in the legs but can theoretically form anywhere in the body. They continue to grow larger if left untreated and cause a lot of pain. While they may eventually dissolve on their own, they can cause permanent vein damage in the area where they were located.

A worse complication arises if the blood clot breaks loose from its place in the vein. If it does, it can lodge in an internal organ. Depending on where it lodges, it can cause damage to the organ, disability, stroke, heart attack, and can even kill someone in certain circumstances. Many women who have used Nexplanon have experienced these things. Any woman who uses Nexplanon is at risk and those who are smokers, over the age of 35, or who have diabetes are at even greater risk. Mississippi Nexplanon attorneys can be of great assistance to those who have been injured.
